Film Music

Renato Premezzi

This course will trace the development of sound with film. In the beginning, when films were projected, music was played live to cover the sound of the projector and to contribute to the mood and the story of the film. From a single piano to a theatre organ or a symphony orchestra, music was selected and created into a unique experience which combined the visual with aural story telling techniques. Film has been described or defined as 24 frames per second of truth and the music supporting this shares the same goals. Both the performer subjectively supplying music in live or recorded performance and the listener/observer are involved in a more powerful media experience when the visual and aural materials are approached analytically and in contexts of evolving styles, personalities and technologies.
